Low-res cover image -- but it's not

I just uploaded a cover file.  Lulu's processor replied that cover images should be 300 dpi.  In my InDesign file, the original images are both 600 dpi and I have it set to downsample the images to 300 dpi, so I don't understand what's going on.

Is there a tool that can inspect a PDF and determine the resolution of the photos?  I have two photos (front and back covers) so I need to tell the resolution of each since they might be different.  The two PDF viewers I have (Sumatra PDF and Acrobat Reader) don't do this.

If InDesign says they are 300dpi, then that should be what they are. But what about the actual physical size in inches too? If I am creating for an A5 cover than I create A5 artwork, at 300 to 600DPI. I always upload Jpgs and let the Wizard convert to PDF.
