epub image border

When I formatted the Word.doc file for the Print version it was an easy thing to get a thin black border around any images or photographs that required one, using: Format Picture / Colors and Lines . . . This method requires the Layout to be set to 'Top and Bottom' wrapping style in the Advanced tab or the Colors and Lines choices will be greyed out.

..However, to do this for the EPUB version it looks a little different . . . According to the Lulu eBook CreatorGuide v1.4e the wrapping style should be 'In line with text' and in this situation the Colors and Lines choices are greyed out leaving no simple method that I can see of creating a simple thin black line around the images.

Any ideas, other than doing all the images over from scratch again in Photoshop with a manually created thin black line - one pixel wide..?

I've never used it, but have a look at this ebook editor and see if it works for you. Scroll down for borders:

That being said, the ebook produced may not pass Lulu's validation process.

    Good luck.

Or, you can take your already lulu-validated epub and carefully edit the code in Code View -- using Sigil.

    <img style="border:5px solid black" alt="" src="../Images/warpsychiatry_pic0010.jpg" />

    The above example is from

So, just go in and add "border:5px solid black" after image style.

    Adapt px to your liking.

  • Thanks for the reply, Maggie, but I'm not really looking for a maybe solution . . . I can't believe I'm the first person to see that a thin black line around a photograph on a white background gives it a bit of va va voom, but what do I know..?

  • Maggie, I've just seen your second post, I'll have a go at that Smiley Happy
  • Yes, I've got that working . . . So, to be clear, I can proceed on the assumption that a Lulu generated EPUB from .word.doc with no problems may be edited in Sigil and uploaded back to Lulu..?

.. because that's not what I have been reading in the Lulu Book Creator Guide.  I'm a bit confused here with the conflicting information if you don't mind me saying   Smiley Frustrated

Can I use Sigil or not?   What are the rules?

  • Em_PressEm_Press Professor

Yes, a lulu-generated epub can be edited in Sigil and reuploaded to Lulu. Just make sure that you "generate toc from headings" at regular intervals. This updates your files and changes.

It sounds like a small thing, but it's huge.

  • Okay, many thanks.
  • Anyone tell me why I can specifically use Sigil but I'm repeatedly told I can't use Calibre..?  Thanks

  • Em_PressEm_Press Professor

Calibre is a converter with some editing capabilities. Sigil is an ebook creator and editor.
