Can I do this?

I really want this book published. Problem is, I can't find the book anywhere for purchase (at least not the English version) - just to read online. I really love this series so I was wondering if it would be illegal for me to print one copy of the book for only me (i am not making any revenue from it) for me to read. Would this be okay? Can I get in legal trouble for this?

For anyone wondering, the series is called No. 6: http://9th-ave.blogspot.com/p/no-6.html

Thank you Smiley Happy

edit: i want the written novel version not the manga/graphic novel version ^_^

  • Yes, that is illegal, and Lulu is not allowed to do that for you because they would be making money off of it and thus profiting from copyright infringement.

The website you linked is for fan translations, which are sometimes ignored by large publishers the same way Doujin can be, but without express permission from the original author/publisher of the untranslated work, it is still technically illegal. The publisher still owns the rights to the work in any language - just because they haven't released an official english version doesn't make that untrue.

If you were to print it for yourself using a home printer would you get in legal trouble? Probably not, but that doesn't make it legal either.

If you really like the series let the publisher know you want to see it in English. They won't make an english version unless they know there is a demand, and every voice counts.

    It is absolutely illegal.

It does not matter whether you make a copy for profit or not.

  • Another legal alternative would be to contact the publisher and to ask for permission.

The answer is likely to be "no," but if the publisher has no intention of releasing an English language edition, they might be willing to allow it, or to allow it for a fee.

  • Only out of curiosity; are you the same one that posted under the name, Kingfish? The reason I ask is because both accounts have only posted once and are both asking about different languages and rights when publishing.
