Problem with TOC (I assume!)

I've been trying to conver a Word doc into an ePub document, and I cannot make it work, even with the most basic formatting. It clearly has something to do with the TOC, because I've tried formatting the whole document to 'normal' and testing it, which works fine, but as soon as I attempt to use 'Heading 1' or 'Heading 2', I get this error message:

Hmmm, we tried to convert your file to an EPUB for you as you requested, but we experienced some issues

If you don't plan to sell your eBook on the iBookstore or NOOK, you can simply proceed with a PDF. However, if you want an EPUB, download our eBook Creator Guide and check out the troubleshooting chapter, it explains EVERYTHING. Or, chat with fellow experts in our community forums.

It doesn't even indicate what the problem is. As far as I can see from the conversion guide, you're supposed to reformat chapter headings with 'Heading 2', but any form of reformatting just causes the conversion to fail with no indication as to why it's failed. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: Problem with TOC (I assume!)

Hey wake_up_bomb,

This is one of those rare occasions where our system doesn't know what went wrong. What project is it? I'd like to have our engineers take a look, so we can have a better idea of what's going on.

Also, I can take a look as well.

Thanks!

Re: Problem with TOC (I assume!)

It might help also if you can tell which version of Word you are using.
Have you modified the default Heading styles?
David is the Lulu in-house expert but if you would like to email a copy of the doc I'll cast my eyes over it as well.

Re: Problem with TOC (I assume!)

Thankyou for the advice David and Ken. In answer to your questions:

I'm using MS Word 2010, but I've tried saving the file in .docx and .doc format, and it made no difference whatsoever.

I haven't modified the default heading styles...is this necessary?

The link for the failure message, David, is http://www.lulu.com/author/wizard/index.php?fCID=11209191

Thanks for offering to look at it, Ken. I'm not sure I would be able to email it in one file, as I think it will exceed the hotmail message limit, but if I can't solve the problem then maybe I could split it up into two files and you can have a look at it that way.

Hopefully I've provided the information required. Any further queries please ask.

Thanks for the response.
I'm sure that David and the back room engineers at Lulu will resolve the problem.
My interest is that I like technical challenges - after all I've been solving them for over 53 years and hopefully will continue to do so for a few more.

I do appreciate the offer, Ken, and I may yet ask for your assistance. It must be great to have a flair and enthusiasm for fixing things; my talents merely lie in breaking things!

Re: Problem with TOC (I assume!)

Ken, "53 years!" did you starting writing code when you were 5?  :smileywink:

Side note - your new EPUBs for Lulu book is great.  Very helpful.
