I need ot raise the quality of my images to meet Ibook and Nook higher ebook image standards

I am looking for a good free program or tool to fix my images to conform to ibooks and nook higher ebook image standards.  I use Gimp but it seems when I raise the resolution, it still isn't good enough.  I read the guide book aboiut 92 DPI and 500 resolution, but GIMP doesn't seem to have dpi specifically?  Bottom line, I need to get the images up to quality standards.

How many images do you have?

By the way 72dpi is the minimum, 150dpi the maxim and 96 the optimum.

In that case invest in a copy of Adobe Photoshop.
If you want proper results and get some proper software.
In design as in life you get what you pay for.

You use to be able to download a trial copy of Corel Paintship over at CNet.com - it's good for like 30 days.I use Corel Paintshop Pro 3x. I beleive the cost to buy if you like the program is around $75.00. But downloading a trial will let you know if you like the program and if it does what you need it to.

BTW: dpi is the resolution - stands for dots per inch. Not sure what you mean by 500 resolution.

Here is what the LULU guide book says for images:  " . Your image must be high-enough resolution to be clear and crisp, but not be so high a resolution that it is too big. Try to keep the resolution on your images low, 96 DPI. You will also want to keep your images to a reasonable size, around 500 pixels or less. You can adjust the image resolution and DPI in any image editing program. "

Okay - resolution is 96 dpi

Size is 500 pixels per side

500 doesn't refer to the resolution - only the actual size of the image in pixels.

At 96 dpi the size would be about 5.2 inches per side. As long as your image size isn't larger than than this and your dpi is set at 96 dpi - that's what your looking for.

I appreciate your response so much.  However the cover is required to be atleast 612 pixels wide and 792 pixels tall?  So what DPI is needed for that size?
