Prepare Word to Create an EPUB-ready Document

By following these steps to configure Word settings properly, you are on your way to a file that will be ready for the Lulu EPUB Converter.

Make a Duplicate File:
Open your document in Word and select “Save As” from the file menu. Give your document a new name and save.

View Everything:
Use the paragraph button in the menu bar (pictured below) to see extra spaces, paragraph returns, field codes, tabs, and other formatting. This shows you what Word may have “Helped” you with.

Track Changes:
If not done already, turn off Word “Track Changes” / “Markup mode” 

Don’t let Word “fix it for you:”
Word AutoCorrect and AutoFormat features make changes to your document based on changes you make. Deactivate these features so that they do not undo the formatting you will learn about later in this guide.

  1. Open the “AutoCorrect Options” Box
    • Using Word 2003 and before, select “AutoCorrect Options” from the Tools menu.

    • Using Word 2007 and later, click the Microsoft Office button or ‘File’ in the upper left-hand corner of the window and select ‘Options’.

      In the Word Options box, go to Proofing and click the AutoCorrrect Options button.

  2. Once in the AutoCorrect box, click the “AutoFormat” tab and deselect the four options under “Apply”.

  3. Click the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab and deselect most of these options.
