Paragraph Formats

To make your book an enjoyable reading experience, you should choose a single method for visually separating paragraphs. There are two common paragraph formats: first line indent or block paragraphs. Most works of fiction use first line indent while most non-fiction works use block paragraph style. Of course, there are exceptions, so you must choose what works best for your book.

Whatever style you choose, do not mix the two and do not use the Return key to add extra spaces between paragraphs. The EPUB converter will remove extra spaces, resulting in your eBook’s paragraphs having no separation.

Example: First Line Indent Paragraph Style

     “Mr. Heathcliff?” I said.

     A nod was the answer.

“Mr. Lockwood, your new tenant, sir. I do myself the honour of calling as soon as possible after my arrival, to express hope that I have not inconvenienced you by my perseverance in soliciting the occupation of Thrushcross Grange: I heard yesterday you had had some thoughts—“

The ‘walk in’ was uttered with closed teeth, and expressed the sentiment, ‘Go to the Deuce:’ even the gate over which he leant manifested no sympathising movement to the words; and I think that circumstance determined me to accept the invitation: I felt interested in a man who seemed more exaggeratedly reserved than myself.
