First timer here. I don't have my project done yet. I was wondering if anyone out there had any advice as far as format, pricing, or any other suggestions.

For me it depends on what the project is. Some of mine are educational resource books, so they are A4 coil bound black and white, and also have pdf ebook versions of them for sale. I have one book which is meant as a parent handbook, so that is square, perfect bound in colour. Others are children's readers, which are A5, saddle stitch and in colour. My hubby is about to publish his novel, which is pocket size, perfect bound, black and white..
In terms of pricing, mine is a niche market, so I look at similar products and being an educator, knowing what the going rate is for them, I set my prices accordingly and want to make them affordable, but still make some money. I keep ebooks low in price as I get more profit from them.
I think if you are writing a book, then you need to see how much the book will COST, and then decide how much profit you want to make per copy. Also if you want to use the distribution packages, you need to look into how much royalty you will get. I don't do this, so I am not an expert on that...
My pricing also depends on my marketing strategy. Some books I will sell direct from my website because they are meant to be in sets, and there isnt the option to do that on here yet, and I discount those.
Marketing your product, whatever it is, is not just about the advertising - you have to consider how you will sell it, to whom, where and for how much, because if you don't get all of that right you may struggle to sell...
Hope that helps. I am sure others have different opinions... I am on maternity leave at the moment, sat around not doing much, so I am just keeping myself busy, churning out things I could have done with in a classroom/school, and any money I make is a bonus!! But, as a marketing graduate too I am trying to be business savvy at the same time.
Good luck in your project :-)

I went with the pocket-size book for a standard novel, perfect bound. I uploaded my own one-piece cover art and a doc file to the lulu pdf convertor. I used Garamond font at 10pt and 97k words stretched to 224 pages (book total pages 332). This createda book with an author cost of £6.80
I'm going for a 9" high by 6" wide version for the second edition in January, with the font size increased to 12. I think this may prove cheaper despite being a bigger trim size and, by font increase, approaching the same number of pages (probably less though).

Hi, I have been viewing the thread with interest. I began publishing using A5 and font zize 12 then I decided on font size 10 (a very readable size) in a 6 x 9 book and used 33% less pages saving me, and my customers quite a lot of money...and not one complaint.

But the covers are fixed and font-size can be changed (?). I could keep the 9X6 at 10-point Garamond, especially as it would mainly be younger people (better eyesight!) reading it...but I think maybe increasing it to 11 might look better...

Yup, but I can have both a pocket-size and "standard" size each with a different isbn. I wonder if I should do a hardback too....any advantages to that?

If I do bring out a different trim size with a different isbn, then do I mark that as a "second edition" or would the original trim size (which I will update as well) be the second edition and the new size the third edition, or would the new one be the first edition in the new size? How confusing!
