Hi there, 

 

Not sure if I'm in the right spot.  I am attempting to upload my paperback file for my book.  It's been ok in the past.  This is just an updated file.  For some reason it's not letting me do it.  It just says to go to lulu support.  So here I am.  haha.

 

I'm hoping that you can get back to me asap as I'd like to upload it in the next day or 2.

I've mentioned this before but it is well worth repeating! The Author Spotlight page isn't nearly functional enough from a perspective customer's point of view. Only having two options for the author to sort the available books is where Lulu is failing miserably. As an author, I would like to be able to arrange my novels in the order I CHOOSE! OR, the customer should have a dropdown option to sort by price low to high, or price high to low, or MORE IMPORTANTLY all eBooks, or all Paperbacks, or all Hardcovers based upon their buying preference. As it stands now, sometimes a potential customer has to go through page after page to FIND what they might be interested in and THAT is a turn off! I believe in Lulu and chose them because I think they are the best. But we are NOT offering the best when it comes to my customers which I try to drive to my author spotlight page instead of a brick and mortar stores or Amazon. PLEASE escalate this issue for SERIOUS consideration!

Back Covers for Calendars! Yet again...

I know this is not a new idea because it's been floated several times around here. How about letting us actually put something on the back cover of our calendars?

 

This has been posted SO many times before. Sometimes a moderator pays lip service, claiming the team will consider implementing this great and sensible idea. Other times the post echoes in the electronic void. I don't know which to expect in this instance, but based on years of similar posts I suspect nothing of use will come out of my two-penny ante. It's incredibly disappointing, because generally speaking so many things are done so well around here, yet Team Lulu just can't seem to be bothered to do anything about this seemingly trivial deal-breaker.

 

To add insult to injury, Lulu itself recognizes that supplying a back cover calendar preview IS AN IMPORTANT ASSET!!! "You may have noticed that thumbnail images of the monthly pictures decorate the back cover of a calendar sold in a bookstore. Many customers like to see all the images in a calendar before purchasing it. We suggest uploading a PDF or a single image file containing small versions of all your calendar images."

In the vain hope of provoking a constructive discussion, does anybody (preferably at Lulu) have an actual, non-pandering, non-boilerplate explanation as to why this seemingly simple feature cannot ever seem to be implemented? Quit insulting our collective intelligence. Either do something about it or supply a real reason as to why you can't.

My Project Re-Arranging

For authors curating sets of books, it would be helpful to be able to arrange "my projects" in any order. Currently you only see projects in the order they are published. It would also be nice to be able to group projects into different folders.

In the latest edition to the Marketing Toolbox (Part two) Paul@LULU apparently hadn't edited it well for there were grammar errors. I simply wanted to bring it to his attention without putting it in the comments section as it seemed something best not to draw attention to. An email to Paul@Lulu.com bounced back as undeliverable. Here was the message I wished to pass along in a more private manner:

 

Don't know if anyone else has noted this but every time you used "its" in the current "episode" it wasn't referring to a possessive but should have been a contraction - it is = it's. Also found spots where a hyphen was needed. Just felt you'd want to know. Doesn't look well for a publishing firm to have glaring Oops spots in the text.
 
I'd appreciate it if you'd simply pass this along to him.

Reviewing pagination

The only area in which I think Lulu is weak is with pagination. 

 

I can say this with some confidence: I have published 7 books with Lulu, one of which is in the top 40 for sales.

 

I wish you gave us a view of the finished file showing facing pages spread.  I have seen photobook printers do this and some of them even simulate the curve of the page with the gutter area shadowed. 

 

For several of my books, the placement of text and pictures on opposing pages was critical, and for almost all of them I have wanted to check things like swinging titles.  This is a pain to do when reviewing the print-ready file as a "column" of single pages

 

I have been trying for 4 years or more to get Lulu to make this innovation..  I do not understand why.  The advantages seem so obvious, and there are best-practice examples out there to copy.  In this limited area of functionality, I would recommen that you look at what CEWE Photo Books offer.

It would be nice to have a link to explain which countries our books were sold to. I was surprised that my books were bought by someone in Turkey, Switzerland, etc. Who would think that CH wasn't china but Switzerland?

Connect by website bookstore to Lulu

I want to have poeple by my books, and checkout on my website, without actually going to lulu.com

 

Of course, lulu would still print the book and get their cut, but the buyer wouldn't have to travel from my website to lulu

 

They would do all of their business on my website (which would somehow be linked to lulu)

 

Is this possible?  If not, I think it should be.

Units Sold

It would be very useful if the total number of units sold was listed with a project's other details. Even if the tally were only updated once a week/month.
Unless there's some method that I'm unaware of, the only way I can track the success/failure of a single project at the moment is if I go through page after page of sales data via "My Revenue" and COUNT..... which is stupid.

Approve Book Digitally with waiver

The process of ordering books only to find an error, yet cannot cancel is absurd. With several hundred pages it is easy to miss something after having ordered a proof. Then, one cannot go back and cancel an order even prior to going to press, let alone an hour later. So then, you have one bad print in the hopper coming out of the bank account and STILL have to order a print copy and pay for shipping. There has to be a better way of tracking and even Stop The Presses! Even if there is a smaller fee than the full press plus ship to offset Lulu's payroll costs, etc.

 

Or with a digital approval, click a Waiver box accepting full responsibility for errors. Some of us who have Text and/or BW orders do not care about paying for and receiving a print before being able to approve and move the process along.

I realize Lulu offers services in editing, formatting, covers, advertising, and so on.

 

The problem is there are people who want to produce the most professional work they can, yet they can't afford to pay a lot for the services they may need.

 

This far too often leads to less than inspiring results that in turn impact Lulu's and the self-published authors' bottom line.

 

If Lulu added a forum for those people who offer freelance services to hang out a shingle for authors on a tight (or almost nonexistant) budget, it would likely lead to a higher quality of work offered.

 

This in turn would help lessen some of the stigma about shoddy work that so many in Traditional Publishing like to use against the Self-Published.

After so much struggle I think a guide how to make a fixed canvas epub should be added at the website.

 

Not all the books are novels, and with the present guidelines it was very difficult to build an epub from the ground up, expecially when you cannot use Word.
