Books with CD

Status: Filed
by rg on ‎02-05-2011 02:47

Please develop an option of a book (in the various sizes) with a CD/DVD in an envelope on the inside back cover. It seems to be quite popular judging by the number of them that are available in brick and mortar outlets.

Paper with an old age look?

Status: Filed
by evilmalady on ‎08-13-2011 02:23

I would love to publish my novel on paper that has the look of an old manuscript in certain parts of the paperback or hardback. Paper gradients (dog-eared, worn, tattered) would give us a nice option to push our ideas further and creatively. A slight discoloration or choice in colored paper would also be exciting to work with. Thanks for your service!

Hi evilmalady, thanks for the suggestion. When we receive enough demand for a specific paper type, its certainly something we'll consider for the future. Thanks for using Lulu!

Is it possible to allow users to run the Cover Design Wizard independently of starting a new project?

I would like to create a new cover but don't want to go through the whole process of editing or starting a new project first.

Hi orfordpiece, thanks for your suggestion. Offering our cover wizard independent from the wizard is a not a direction we wish to go, but we may consider in the future making it easier to access. Thanks for using Lulu!

Following David Woodward, i post the suggestion also here. It was posted in an other discussion and had 3 kudos there.

Please propose not only two column layouts, but also three column layouts.

Hi Benziger, thanks for your suggestion. We played around with this idea awhile ago, and unfortunately, the design really just didn't work for too many different scenarios. Definitely a good idea, though, and thanks for using Lulu!

Restore Old Storefront Web Address

Status: Filed
by bruceb@ohio.edu on ‎10-26-2011 09:36

Can you please restore the old storefront Web address?

My old storefront Web address leads to Lulu.com, not to my new spotlight.

Hi David, thanks for your suggestion, but unfortunately, we can't do this, and at this point, we'd rather focus on improving our author spotlight to provide all the functionality our authors are asking for. Thanks for using Lulu!

A have a number of booklets I cannot publish at Lulu: Small format (A6) and only a few pages.

Best for staple binding, starting at 8 pages, but not available for A6 (105 × 148 mm or  4.13 × 5.83 in). Why not? It could be also a similar american format or canadian P6.

This could also be a new business field for tracts for churches...

Hi Benziger, thanks for your suggestion. At Lulu, we try to provide a nice balance of options, but not too many options that its overwhelming and drives printing costs higher. If we begin to receive more demand for this size, we may explore adding it in the future. Thanks for using Lulu!

Theatre Plays

Status: Filed
by MarkRidge on ‎07-12-2011 10:01

There is no catagory for theatre plays in the buying section.  There are quite a few plays on lulu, but you really have to search them out.

Hi Mark, thanks for the suggestion. In the end, most books are found through marketing or searching, but we certainly monitor the category list to ensure they represent the best classification of books for our buyers. Thanks for using Lulu!

Forum Subjects.

Status: Filed
by on ‎05-10-2011 09:30
The old forums used to have many many different 'threads' for every subject to do with writing and other creative things you could use Lulu for. Just 2 examples >> Fiction and Non-Fiction with dozens of sub-headings! Not simply help threads for people having bother with using Lulu. Can we have them back please?

Can old threads in the forums not be removed or at least blocked from further replies? Even archiving them is usually pointless.

I say removed because the advice in them can be out of date very fast, and some of the threads go back years!

I suggest blocked from further replies if you cannot remove them, because people replying to postings months or years old is just as pointless.

Perhaps make the dates on them more obvious if you cannot do the above, then perhaps people may notice that they are replying to a posting years old, so they may realise they are wasting their time. Smiley Frustrated

This is one of the most frequently requested features in the Lithium community. I have added my voice to the chorus - twice now. Hopefully, Lithium will listen to reason and allow moderators to retire posts after a set period.
I seem to always have a problem with shipping to the wrong address. Twice this week I've had to go back and change the shipping address. I noticed that there's a big box on the confirmation page to remind people to check the address, which makes me think that I'm not the only one who has done this. I think I figured out what the problem is though, and how to solve it: on the page where you select an address, just don't pre-select an address. Make people select an address instead. It might be slightly less convenient for people who always order to the same place, but it would be quite a bit more helpful to people like me who assume that the default is where we want to go. In any case, it's just a suggestion of a place that a small change can make a big difference.

Hi jtw90210, thanks for your suggestion. This is a classic problem with designing pages... if you make things too easy, people make mistakes, but if you make things too hard, they leave before they can make a mistake Smiley Happy This is a good idea, we may consider making the address in the review step larger so its more noticeable, but this would introduce some usability concerns. Thanks for using Lulu!

Gentlemen,

I have received two books with loose pages. Don't go easy on the glue.

Hi antpri, we're sorry there were printing issues with your book. Contact our help & support department, and they'll be happy to re-order a brand new copy for you. Thanks for using Lulu!

I would like to offer the PDF version of a given book for free to anyone who buys the printed copy. Since storage and bandwidth are practically free these days, it wouldn't cost Lulu extra to give away a PDF draft with each printed copy, and would probably result in a lot more sales of printed material since the buyer would be getting a free bonus of the electronic copy of the publication.

I sent the following message to Customer Support here at Lulu, and he suggested that I post my comments here.  Perhaps I'm the only one complaining?  Anyway, here are my thoughts about the new author Spotlight.

I am extremely unhappy with the new Spotlight format which has limited customization options!  I have now lost the ability to place my web page hit counter in the new Spotlight, and that was so helpful in seeing the traffic to my site.  I tried putting both the code and the counter into the limited space for my profile information, but it simply doesn't work, because the block is not set up to accept computer code.

I also cannot add any other information about my books, because there is no option to add more text or HTML blocks like there was with the other website setup.  Lastly, I am very unhappy that I can't organize my books the way I want them.  The book organization options don't make any sense for my books.  I want to be able to place them in the order I want them in.

Surely I'm not the only one completely dismayed by this frustrating and very limited website design.  Will more options be added later?  Even the ability to add just one HTML block would help, so I could recover my web page counter.

Another additional HTML block would also be nice, so I could give potential book buyers accessing my spotlight the current coupon code to use for their book purchase.  If they are directed to the Spotlight with whatever search engine they are using, they can't see the current coupon offer.

Actually, I'm not as frustrated now as I was when I had copied all of my data from my old website and then clicked on the link to set up my new Spotlight only to find, to my great dismay, that I couldn't use but a few sentences of the vast information I had posted on my old Lulu site.  After fuming about it for awhile and sending my comments above, I searched for and found a wonderful website hosting company called 1&1, and spent very little money to get a great website-building tool package, register my domain, and set up a website devoted to information about my novel that is much nicer than my old web page here on Lulu was.  I now have that website linked with my Spotlight here on Lulu, and I am finally a very happy camper.  To me it has been worth the extra money spent to have a much better setup with subject pages, graphics, and even an animated flash greeting.  Oh, and I was able to place my lovely web page hit counter on my new website with 1&1 without losing any of the count already stored on it.

I'm done ranting!  (giggle)

Hi Karen, thanks for your note. Many of your comments are common amongst other authors, and we're considering many of these ideas as enhancements to Author Spotlight for the future. Thanks for using Lulu!
I have been thinking lately, and I realized the lulu.com should mail you a free copy of your book and have it printed right away when published. What I was thinking was that we would not have to pay the price of shipping nor printing. I mean, we took the hard work of writing the book, why shouldn't we be able to have it for no cost at all stocked on our shelves?

paper quality

Status: Filed
by rappel on ‎07-22-2011 01:06

it ought to be noted on the booksizes page that there are different kinds of papers involved in the various binding choices.

I ordered a number of hardcover casewraps , and one hardcover dustjacket. I was surprised that the quality of paper in the casewraps feels really generic and cheap where as the paper in the dustjacket book is a nice cream color. it would be very helpful to have known this before ordering the casewraps, I would have made them all dustjackets.

Lulu's buy now buttons are useful in my site - but I want to encourage users to come and see the preview. Some are spooked by thinking that clicking a buy now button is going to commit them before they have seen anything.

Could Lulu please build:

"Preview"

"Preview before you buy"

"Preview or Buy now!"

buttons.

Bring back the custom coupon code

Status: Filed
by on ‎05-25-2012 08:10

I liked the old Lulu coupon codes (mine had a name and ended in 305) instead of the new promotions you are giving us for customers. It's very complicated. For example I need to send them to lulu.com and then give them a link to go to my book. I'm also confused if I use the code to stock up on my own books and then the customer cannot. My sales are dropping off. Please go back to the coupon code. It was much easier.

Hello n9vjg - Thank you for taking the time to recommend this improvement. I have passed it along to the Marketplace product manager for consideration. Until a decision is made on how to proceed, perhaps you can do the following. When you receive an email announcing a sale, make a note of the coupon code (which is case sensitive and country-specific, btw). Tweet / Facebook / Announce the sale using a URL to your product page and include the site wide sale coupon code in your announcement. This will drive buyers to your product page or author spotlight page, coupon in hand, from which they can make their purchase.

Dear lulu.com

I think it would be a very wise idea if your business was to get a phone number so customers or publishers have questions they can get ahold of you a lot easier
