Numbers - my nemesis

Back again with a slightly different problem.

I had successfully published one copy of a book (numbering OK) but am reviewing it to take out first pages with number 1-4.

That's fine, I've uploaded file with page number 1-4 removed, and uploaded another file with pages 5-188 with numbering at bottom of page L & R.

That is fine on my template, but on the Print Ready copy, the numbers which are supposed to appear at bottom right and left, appear OK on odd pages, but on the even pages the number jumps about a third of a page distance from the centrefold.

I have tried 8 times revising the file, using new blank documents, even tried putting the numbers in the bottom centre of the page, but I still get the even-numbered page showing the number in the wrong spot which look quite rediculous.

Any ideas, thanks.

[ Edited ]

I started responding to your post three times and cancelled because I cannot even  visualize your problem. But since you are here and stuck and everyone else seems to be away, let me give it a shot.

-Check in draft view to see that you do not have extra sections.

-Click on the formattng symbol and see all your spaces and paragraphs and make sure they match in all parts of your book

-Check that you have clicked : Different first page, odd and even pages, and make sure the headers and footers are the same size.

-Finally, print a PDF before you upload so that you see exactly what is going on.

Download CutePDF or dopdf7 and print your Word document. View it in Acrobat Reader. It will give you a lot of answers as to what is really there.

Re: Numbers - my nemesis

If you are using Page Breaks and New Sections etc, you need to make sure the settings also apply to 'All Sections' or 'This Section' (plus some other options to do with the same.) And do not forget to check they Sections also because it is not always clear which on your are in (should tell you down the bottom left corner.) Also make sure you can see all non-printing symbols and stuff.

Re: Numbers - my nemesis

Thanks Maggie,

I'll try making a pdf - I usually upload my text to the LuLu template and go that way.

The Body of the text is fine and I have made the text into one section to alleviate the problem with section breaks etc.

The only problem is in the footer on the even numbered page.

This is where my page numbering appears :      ...........8... // ................9  (without the dots and backslashes)??

Will keep trying. Even going to crank up my old computer to see if I have a bug in the Word formatting.

thanks,

Marg

Re: Numbers - my nemesis

EUREKA!!   I've succeeded!

After 10 attempts at revised uploads, I decided to change from numbering the bottom of the page, where the problem was, and switched to the top of the page.

It's different to my previous book, but at least it worked. I have just ordered a copy, and, as this was a minor revision, I have now accepted this book and the one I finished a couple of days ago.

Look out for THE CONDOR'S FEATHER and THE BLACK THREAD with two more to follow.

Whooppee!  Thanks to all for help.

Re: Numbers - my nemesis

What often puzzles me with some of these questions is they mention uploading to Lulu's Templates. For book innards there are no templates within the Wizards (apart from the Cover sections). You select a book size/shape, then you have to create a file that is to that exact size/shape and then upload it. One size/shape does not fit all :-)

Re: Numbers - my nemesis

Now you have me scratching my head, Kevin, when you say 'For book innards there are no templates'.

I work on WORD in the normal width setting which I do all my typing in.

When I have a finished manuscript, I upload the WORD doc to the Lulu 6x9 template which then magically gives my pages upper and lower margins, and the correct left and right page variable margins. I don't do need to do any sizing and shaping by this method. I think it's fantastic.

Re: Numbers - my nemesis

I was speaking in general really. However, I still say there are no templates within the wizards, just shapes and sizes to choose at the start, but devoid of margins etc etc etc etc, unlike Photobooks for example where you work on the pages as if they are all 'covers'. to be built up within the wizard.
