If the Lulu converter cannot even get started it won't be able to define the problem.

You may have a corrupt Word doc file. 

You may find this tutorial on EPUB validation helpful.

Thanks anyway, I think I'll just stay where I am for now. I wanted to give Lulu a try, but judging from the forums, it seems there are many problems with uploading, printing, formatting, pricing, etc.

I agree.  I have published books previously, but this time I cannot get the epub converter to tell me anything other than "we tried" -- with no explanation.  I have gone over the instructions multiple times with a check list and I cannot see anything that should cause it to fail....

EPUBs are different. FULL STOP. The Lulu Word to EPUB converter is meant for simple novel type documents. In simplest term an EPUB is a group of HTML/XHTML files as found in the basic files of a web site. An understanding of the coding there helps enormously. But there is really no need for authors to know the detail as if they concentrate on writing which is their expertise and leave the coding and trouble shooting to people like me.
