Maybe all the above can help, but i think only up to a point. I am disappointed in many  people reading just previews, giving a nice comment and a thumbs up, but not buying anything. Unfortunately, it happens too often, and for the life of me, i cannot understand why. If they were genuinely interested in the preview, what stopped them from actually buying the book if it was offered at an affordable price? With the pdf format available, the price is even lower. A Starbucks coffee often costs more. Furthermore, most writers and authors i know, are avid readers themselves, so why the lack of interest? I am especially sensitive to first time authors like myself, so they are on the top of my priority list. I try to buy and read as many of their books as i possibly can. Even i don't end up falling in love with a book, most of the times i will find at least one thing i like about it, therefore it was time well spent.

@sunset - unfortunately I cannot afford every book that I want to read, nor do I have the time to read it. I can understand your frustration in sales, but part of that may be in your preview. Is your preview enough of a hook to get people to buy your book? This is the heart of sales, making the customer realize they need your product.

Its an ongoing problem among many authors. We post previews to give the buyer a sample, like giving a stick worth of food to a passing shopper hoping they'll buy the food. But so far none of the standard marketing has worked, and it's now because of market forces like the rising price of food and gas.

You all are the best!  The advise and experience is truly helpful.  I'm in all these places but have approached them all wrong.  

 

The ultimate verdict will be do you get more traffic to Lulu or to Amazon?  Perhaps in mass media one trends more favorably????

From my experience, Amazon has always sold more books than Lulu. Amazon is a retailer, whereas Lulu is a printer/publisher. Lulu's sales model is geared toward authors, whereas Amazon is geared toward buyers. In the final analysis, which one would you pick?

You chose all the important and right places for marketing. Advertising and marketing through the social network is like a trend now and it's also true that we can get huge responses. You just gave me some brilliant ideas. Thanks and I'm sure your post is going to prove very help

As far as most internet users are concerned, Amazon is a known quantity. They have most likely used it before, or at least heard of it. You may get less revenue from purchases on Amazon, but the level of trust the customer has with the retailer will also influence your sales. If they think you are only dealing with a site they may have never heard of, they may also think less of your product. Go with Amazon, and hope for higher volume of sales to make up the difference in revenue!
