Manage your eBook Distribution

Hello Lulu aficionados,

Today you might have noticed a slight change to your “My Project” page under the “My Lulu” tab.  Here, we’ve added a handy new “manage distribution” button that'll direct you to a whole new page designed to help you opt-in or opt-out of any distribution channel with the click of a button.

With this new distribution management feature, you'll also see a new retail opportunity available – Barnes & Noble's NOOK.

Be on the lookout for more information about this new feature, new retail channel, and all the wonderful benefits that come with them in the coming weeks.

Best,
Lulu Press

I really can't find it, David. In fact, I don't think it's there.

Re: Manage your eBook Distribution

David - this only works if - in fact - I have the opportunity to prevent being opted in before something is ONCE AGAIN sent to the iBookstore as I see another of my books has again had done.

What you need to do is set up on the project screen a button that allows me as the creator to tell LULU to NOT Convert any of my books - since it appears this only shows up ONCE the books has been converted. The manage distribution button on a physical book of course gives me the option for global outreach. But what is needed is something that also allows for opt-in into ebook conversion. AND IF THAT IS NOT SELECTED THE BOOK IS NOT CONVERTED OR DISTRIBUTED.

Yes, I'm a bit angry that ONCE AGAIN another of my books has been converted and apparently distributed without authorization.

Re: Manage your eBook Distribution

It's good to see changes and to actauly be told about them! Is this in reply to those who moaned that it used to be Opt-out rather than Opt-in, and people found they had been Opted-in before they could Opt-out?
BTW, the Nook is far outselling the kindle just now. Remarkable because I have never heard of it till last week!
What puzzles me is, what tool is being used to turn people's files made for printing, in to an e-book?

Re: Manage your eBook Distribution

It wasn't just moaning Kevin - it was a matter of copyright violation as Lulu assumed they had rights to copy and distribute something they didn't have the right to do so with.

The 'tool' is something that Lulu is using behind the scenes - converting - distributing and then notifying.

The problem I saw with this new system is that the ebook distribution management button only shows up AFTER the book has been converted and then you still have to opt-out after the fact.

What needs to make this a true opt-in system, as it should be to prevent copyright violation on the part of Lulu, is that creators can select WHEN THE PROJECT IS CREATED whether to allow the project to be automatically opted into new distibution channels as they become available or the leave it opted-out unless changed by the creator.

Bit odd that they have such a tool ...

But I can't say I disagree with you.

Re: Manage your eBook Distribution

There are several different programs available that allow you to convert a file from various formats to the different eBook formats.

Both Kindle and Nook ask creators to upload as a .doc file and their system converts the file to their specific format.
Sony requires that you file already be in epub format and that have some stringent requirements on that file as well
Another company also requies you to upload as a .doc file and their system converts into several different formats

It's really a matter of the soft used.

Re: Manage your eBook Distribution

Hi David,

I've found the "manage distribution" button but I still have a problem.

I am trying to publish my first eboook on Lulu on the iBookstore site, and of course Lulu. I only seem to have one more fence to get over (at least that what it seems like to me) but last time I tried to publish I got two error messages as follows:

"

  • Your eBook (cover, description or content) cannot contain links to other sites, products or upsell of other items. Conversion software links are not acceptable.
  • Our technical review team added:
You still have "Richard Forsyth" on your cover and it needs to be added to your metadata.
    "

I'm fairly sure I've cracked the 2nd problem (I've added Richard Forsyth as a 2nd author to the metadata with a role of 'edt'. I've also searched high and low throughout my ebook for links to other sites, products, or upsell or other conversion software links and I've removed everything which might remotely be considered such a thing.

I've resubmitted my ebook and now get the message:

"

Our technical review team noted:
If you don't follow the instructions that have been asked of you in previous rejection emails, you delay the distribution of your eBook. "

I assume this means that I've corrected the metadata but still have to remove links to other sites etc. However, it is very non-specific. Is there some way that I can find out what the outstanding problem is???

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated, and would help what I hope is our common objective of getting (my) ebook published.

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.

No, what I mean is, what are they using that 'strips' all the unwanted things from a file formatted for a printable book, so it is then a file (even a doc file) that can then be used to convert to an e-book file? E-book files and files created to be converted to an e-book file hardly use any kind of formatting at all.
