help on understanding image resolution/DPI?

[ Edited ]

Hello, first off I just wanted to say that this seems like an AWESOME site and just the thing I need to get my book out of my head and into the real world! I'm currently working on a sort of tips/instructional book for the Korg microKorg synthesizer that will show the user the fundamentals of synthesis with the microKORG and teach them how to make amazing sounds and provide instructions to recreate a few popular sounds. The working title is Mighty Micro: Getting The Most Out Of Your Korg microKORG, and I'm currently in the first draft, I think the target audience is going to love it!

This being said, I have a question regarding images in the book. I will obviously need a few images to demonstrate a few things (setting up the microKORG, proper chording for each sound, setting up the MIDI interface, etc...) but I read that Lulu needs at least 300 dpi images for good print quality. This is worrying to me, as my current camera apparently only takes 96dpi pictures. I'm confused because it's a 14MP HD camera, and the pictures it takes are large and very high quality!

Do you think that 96dpi will be good quality for a book as long as the picture quality is high? If not, would it work to bump the DPI up in a software program? (I found out I can change DPI in Irfanview, but this doesn't really affect quality and increases the file size by a large margin.) This is the only camera I have access to at the moment, and I definitely want to make sure I'm putting the best out for my future readers, so you can see why I might come off as concerned. :3

I'm sorry if this is something basic for you guys, I don't know too much about cameras and images and stuff.

Anyway, thanks for taking your time to read this, and thank you to the Lulu.com staff for making such a wonderful site!

Peace.
