ebook versus electronic download.

Ebook versus electronic format.
I’m trying to understand the difference between having a traditional book that is also available as a download vs. ebooks. Having trouble find this in lulu faq’s. If there is a difference, and do I need to start a new project with the same book to create an ebook, or is there a way via revisions to create an ebook format.

Re: ebook versus electronic download.

When you create a print-format book you have the option to sell the book's pdf as a separate download. This will be in pdf format only, and you can give this away for free if you like.

When you make an ebook per se, it's a separate product that you use a different wizard and process for and must start a new project to do so. Here you can also upload your pdf if you wish, or you can choose to upload a different kind of book format, eg ePub. You would have to create this format outside of Lulu, though, because Lulu only creates pdfs from the files that you upload.

All types are digital really, but I know what you mean. But a 'real' e-book is very different from the kind of 'print-ready' PDF the lulu wizard creates when you use a 'real' book project. E-books are a lot simpler in content. This should help >>

Thanks. You have all answered my questions but I have one regarding DOWNLOADS. Is the download protected like the e-book or can it be shared and passed around? If so, I certainly don't want it out there.

No, the download option for 'real' books is a plain old PDF and people can do anything with it. Not only that, once they have bought it they can DL it as many times as they like, apparently.
If you even upload a PDF to the book wizards and also copy-protect it, lulu rejects it because the printers cannot use it.
To be honest I am not sure if the lulu e-books are that well protected anyway. I suppose like all digital stuff you make your choice and take your chances.

Re: ebook versus electronic download.

Want to convert some of my standard books to e-book but the creation program does not have a function that permits the use of the original covers I already have on file or even a function that alows them to be uploaded. It only has a function to create a new cover. So how do I use the original book cover?

Re: ebook versus electronic download.

You can download the cover as a pdf from the book's 'Revise' page. You'd then have to find a way to convert the double-width (front and back, with spine) cover into separate images for a front and a back jpg. If you have access to Photoshop you could do this, and I think the free program GIMP will probably allow you to do it, too. You would then need to find a way to put the front and back cover at either end of your ebook project.

You can download a 30-day trial version of Photoshop from the adobe.com website.

Re: ebook versus electronic download.

My view is that if people are going to copy your work, theres really nothing you can do to stop them, whatever the format.

I think the easiest way to stop it is to make your work as easily available as possible and seed it across the internet before anyone else does, that way more people recognise you as the author. As for revenue, people always seem to want a book rather than a pdf anyway so they will buy if they like it.

Just my thoughts

Re: ebook versus electronic download.

OK. I understand that EBooks and Downloadable books are different. But where can I go to actually SEE the difference? Sorry to be difficult about it, but the link in this conversation no longer works, and as a senior citizen, I really need a visual to show me how the two processes differ. I've seen downloadables, but as I don't have or use an EBook reader, I need to see what I have to do differently to write for that process. Thanks.
