2/5/2008 - New Barcodes on CDs and DVDs

In an effort to streamline our DVD and CD creation process, Lulu has recently implemented the use of barcodes. These barcodes are very small (1.5” x 0.5” or 3.81 x 1.27 cm) and will appear on various sections of the CD and DVD finished product. The implementation of these barcodes is strictly for the purpose of keeping the various pieces of your project together during production, and is not for the purpose of assisting in retail sales.

The location of the barcode varies.

For DVDs:

* the barcode appears on the back of the case in the upper right-hand corner, 0.125” (or .32 cm) from the spine and 0.25” (or 0.64 cm) from the top.

For CDs:
* the barcode appears on the back of the insert in the upper right-hand corner, 0.125” (or .32 cm) from the top and side.

* the barcode also appears on the tray card (back of the case) aligned to the bottom right-hand corner.

On all discs:

* The barcode will appear horizontally, 0.375” (or .95 cm) from the edge of the disc, 1.48” (or 3.68 cm) from the center.

You can find templates with the proper dimensions in our help section here: http://www.lulu.com/en/help/disc_faq#disc_art_dimensions

Thanks!

How does this affect existing CD projects? What about ones that have been private but are then made public?

All existing CD and DVD projects will have this barcode automatically applied in the various locations mentioned above.

...which means everyone will have to check and revise their artwork so the barcode doesn't land on top of something important. Given that many Lulu authors don't trawl the forums for announcements this should be interesting to watch.

Ay-yuh.

I've already seen one of mine, and I was quite lucky with the locations. Nothing needs to be changed ... on that one.

Geez....

Did nobody think to give us a head's up before implementing something that directly affects the look of each disk?

I just checked the CD label layout and discovered the new bar code will go right over part of the copyright text and part of the list of titles. This is now under my friend's ID (I was doing it for her) and she JUST ordered 5 CD's to test sell for Valentine's day.

If this doesn't work for her, will she be able to return them? Right now it looks like what she's getting will NOT look like the proof she got before ordering more than one.

That's nice.

Right over the top of where the ISBN barcode goes on my data CD. Not to mention wrecking the CD artwork.

Thanks Lulu - another brilliant ill thought out move.

Guess you can bet I'm not very happy...

Re: 2/5/2008 - New Barcodes on CDs and DVDs

Regarding the new CD manufacturing process, it results in a grossly inferior product that is so trashy I’m ashamed to even give it away, much less sell it to somebody. Like everybody else trying to use LULU as a CD fulfillment operation, I received notice that a new process for making CDs had been adopted with barcodes that add no value to the product yet detract from the overall appearance. So I ordered one to access the damage. The barcode on the CD did in fact screw up the label, which will of course require new artwork, and the label was printed on the disc off center. But those annoyance were far overshadowed by the shoddy printing of the inserts. In fact the tray insert, which includes the labels that are supposed to show on two edges of the jewel case are not visible because the tray insert was cut crooked – it actually looks as if the trimming was subcontracted to a kindergarten class with cheap plastic scissors, no kidding. I print my own inserts and cut them with scissors and hand fold them to fit in the cases, and it looks amateurish. Compared to the product I got from LULU, my arthritic old fingers still do a far superior job. I compare this to a previous CD I ordered from LULU when I finally got my project completed, and the difference is sadly astounding. To misquote a familiar old saying, “Whatever we’re paying these guys … it’s WAY too much!"

Like everybody else trying to create marketable CD products with LULU, I have suffered through wizards that just stop working, uploads that never seem to actually upload anything, limited category selection, and the ever-miserable ISO boondoggle, but at least the product I got at the end looked professional. Nobody was happier than I when LULU finally worked out most of the bugs in building the project, and I was ready, set, go to make 2008 my advertising campaign kickoff. I’m basically a one-man show here, and every dollar I spend comes from giving up something else. Anybody who’s tried to sell ANYTHING in America knows that appearance SELLS! The new CD that LULU is now producing literally screams SECOND RATE JUNK!, in stark contrast to the superior quality books LULU produces (yeah, POD costs a lot, but at least you get a good, solid product). So, it’s back to the drawing board for me. I’m beginning to wish that I had taken the advice way back when from the guy who posted the comment saying that LULU CDs cost too much per unit and there are much less expensive fulfillment operations to be had. Yeah, I’ll have to put money up front to sell my games on Amazon.com, but at least I know my product won’t look like Chinese prison-labor rejects. It looks like LULU is really only interested in downloads and books, I just wish she/he/it would stop pretending otherwise.

Oh, and by the way, did I mention that there are NO FILES on the CD! On the other hand, I got it only a few days after ordering and the jewel case isn’t broken. Wow.

Re: 2/5/2008 - New Barcodes on CDs and DVDs

CB,
I am a bit confused as you mention that you have an ISBN on your CD. Those are reserved for books. :?

Mr. Williamson,
Thank you for your detailed experience with your CD. You make a lot of very good points. What really concerns me is the quality of the CD you have in your hands. The samples that I have personally seen are far superior than what you mention, and it has me wondering if you received a a bum product. Of course, there should be *files* on the CD.
I urge you to contact Customer Support at orders@lulu.com. Please get this looked into. I am sorry that I cannot provide more information in the forums, but this will get fixed for you. Be sure to state your order number.
From my experience, users who have received the CDs and DVD are rather pleased with the improved quality.
Cheers,
Carol

Re: 2/5/2008 - New Barcodes on CDs and DVDs

To say that I received a bum product is like saying that Seattle gets a little rain (and I say that lightheartedly!). Happy to know that maybe the powers that be were only frowning on me, which may well be true because my scanner died today too. I contacted customer support about the no files, but I didn't bother with complaining about the crappy quality of the product as a whole. In the meantime I have removed the product from my website catalog and Lulu, pending my decision as to whether it's worth trying to fix or simply seek another vendor. Thanks for your interest and timely replyl
