Re: ISBN # QUESTIONS

Is it possible to change my ISBN options with LULU.I originally requested the free one but, now I understand that LULU gets almost 50% for my book sales.  I would prefer that they print my books but, I already have thier ISBN but my projects have not yet been completed .Will I need to get a new ISBN ?  Or, can they sell me the ISBN that  was given to my books? In other words can I buy an ISBN from LULU without becoming a partner so to speak?

Re: ISBN # QUESTIONS

Well after having read all that has bee written, much of it full of opinion. One erroneous assumption is that one assumes ones books will appear on book store shelves by virtue of global and that of course is not the belief here. However when one goes to these various shops with complimentary copies of the work being able to say and if you and your customers express interest you can wholesale from X. that you may already get some of your inventory from sales become more likely. This is the only reason one would want global for the sheer convenience to real world book sellers.

My work falls into a niche market with stores that specifically cater to it unlike trying to get someone like B&N to put it on their shelves.

None the less thank you for all your answers and opinions and perhaps I have missed something in the realm of format I will have to investigate this further.

As far as what lulu told me through online chat, I got the distinct feeling the person on the other end was blurting out scripted answers as often is the case when one ends up on an online "call center."

Re: ISBN # QUESTIONS

I do aprreciate all of the information that you have given me. It is helpful. But, I am still not cler on the %. Does LULU and the printers charge more when I charege more? For intance if I priced by book at $40.00, what would be the break down?

And does it take 6-8 weeks to get your books back?  Or, is that just tghe time it takes for approval when you used a LULU ISBN? Otherwis., if I only want them to print not distribute; use my own ISBN; how long will it take to get my books back, and what will I pay for printing only?

[ Edited ]

Hi again, Lulu does Not get 50% of your book sales.
The Printing company( the one that prints my books from Lulu orders is in Melbourne Australia) charges for printing books. Lulu gets about 2% of your Book sales.

My costing price example was about 50% of the selling price. You get about 48%.

So if your book priced $40 hase a cost price of $10 then the Printer gets $10; you get $30 less the 2% Lulu charges for the ordering services.
If you priced your book at three times your cost price then you would get about 73% of the sale on each sale.
Whether you publish with Lulu ISBN or not, you still have to pay the printer!

Hope this helps

Eliza

Re: ISBN # QUESTIONS

Lulu is full of Help and pages that explain it all. Those in the forums who try to help people usually know the answers because they have read the site and tried to learn it, or when asked a question, we even take the trouble to try and find the answer on Lulu, in the same manner that the person asking the question could have done themselves in the first place.
Where some of the newbies get what they think from about how Lulu works and what it costs, and about ISBNs, is beyond me.
What I can suggest is, why not try it? Stick some files through a Wizard for start (do it on Private) and at the end it will tell you exactly what the costs will be (but only when a book is ordered, until that point it costs nothing.)
If you want to try a free Lulu ISBN, then try it. What is there to loose in not doing so? The copyright remains yours and Lulu do not demand exclusivity, just not to use their ISBN if you publish eslewhere.
You can create the same book as multiple Projects. One set at Private with no ISBN and one set at General with a Lulu ISBN, that way you get it both ways. You can promote either one anyway you wish and you can buy each one yourself and sell it anyway you wish, too.
Just give it a try. It all becomes clear once you do.

Re: ISBN # QUESTIONS

Finally a definitive answer from lulu....

if a project is listed as having Extended Reach distribution you will need to create a new project (but it can be the same content) in order to submit it through Global Reach. However, if a project has Global Reach & is a size that is eligible for Extended Reach then it can be submitted through both distribution packages at once. So if you decide you would like Global Reach in the future, you can re-create your project & add a fresh ISBN.

Of course as a way to offer variety to your readers you are more than welcome to create a different book size/type for your "APOCalypse 2500 Main Rule Book" and select Global Reach for it.

Please also reference the Connect article that lists the products eligible for Global Reach by clicking the blue "Global Reach" http://connect.lulu.com/t5/ISBN-Distribution/What-Products-are-Eligible-for-Retail-Distribution/ta-p...

While we do offer ISBNs for books published through us (which means that your book can hypothetically be ordered through bookstores), print-on-demand economics prohibit large discounts that bookstores require to stock books. Bookstores depend on the economy of scale available to large publishers and print distributors. Bookstores are only going to buy Lulu books when they are special-ordered by customers. The Web is a terrific way to sell books, as Amazon.com has demonstrated.

Both Extended Reach and Global Reach are for online distributors. This Connect page lists the distributors & compares the distribution packages: http://connect.lulu.com/t5/ISBN-Distribution/Distribution-Package-Comparison/ta-p/33342
