Does a second edition remove first edition?

I want to publish an update to one of my books.

If I create the update as a "second edition"...

  • Can I use the same ISBN?
  • Will readers be able to continue to purchase the first edition?

Tx,

Re: Does a second edition remove first edition?

Hi Ken,

Can a Second Edition of a book really use the same ISBN as the First Edition? I thought that a new edition required a new ISBN. Or has one of us misunderstood Rick's question?

Tony.

Thanks Ken.

So, if I want to update my book (http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/tiki-essentials/14020347  -- 1st edition -- that was written for Version 6 of the software) to reflect the new Version 7 of the software, but still keep the old version available, I need to create an entirely new project, instead of updating (revising) the existing project?

Will it matter if the title is identical, if they have different ISBNs?

Tx,

Re: Does a second edition remove first edition?

"Each version of a book — paperback, hardcover, second edition — must have a different ISBN." (Lulu Help pages)

Is this true or false, or did I misunderstand? I too would like to publish an updated version of my book. Can you please respond in a little more detail?

Thanks.

Re: Does a second edition remove first edition?

Version vis Edition.

If you just update the content (correcting typos etc) and still publish it as the same edition then it will be a new version of the same edition and you keep the iSBN.
