That answer did not make any sense. You must have meant it for someone else. Again, how secure is my social security number with lulu? I'm really worried about identity theft.

Feel like I showed up in the middle of a conversation here...
Identity theft is a problem all over. Always a risk, but I haven't heard of anything was revealed at Lulu. Have you heard something new??

Hello Dawn, I'm not sure what answer you refer too, but if you are selling a book on lulu, you must submit a W-9 form. That includes a SS number.
Here's a link for info on how to submit.
Hope that helps.

When you get a job, your employer has you fill out a W4. You report your SSN on your W4. The W9 is really no different, and although you would have to ask lulu directly rather than on a user forum, I wouldn't expect lulu's security procedures to be any better or worse than any other business that is required by law to collect SS numbers for reporting purposes.

But you don't work for Lulu - you are not Lulu's employee. Why doesn't everyone else follow Apple's model with apps sales and revenue? As far as they are concerned, they do NOT take or accept W2s or provide 1099s Misc forms at year end. You are a private contractor and are responsible for reporting your own income. The same way you pay a contractor or traveling sales person doing business in your home - you facilitate the sales/transaction and pay them in return, but at the same time, you do NOT collect their SS number or report the monies you pay them to the IRS. These contractors must do this on their own as most small business do. The last time I checked eBay does the same thing.
However, if you hire someone as an employee/employer relationship, then you are required to withhold/report income/tax as they do with a regular day job.
