I used to be a colour mixer and, for example, there were around 30 shades of white because they did look white! but because they had elements of other substances in them, they were really not white. Arctic White was actually very very very light blue, not white.
Renault White was actually very very light green., so again useless if you really wanted white.
People actually see slighty different colours, but you can often see the very off-shades by squinting. :-)
