Hi
I am new to the self-publishing topic and was wondering if someone may be able to help me with answers to some questions.
I have a small self-help book that I would like to get published; I would like to list it for sale on my website and on Amazon, and maybe get it on the e-readers too.
What I would like to know is about ISBN numbers; as far as I can see an ISBN amongst other things, says who the publisher is, so if I get one from Lulu that means any copies will come from them, I was also wondering how this works if say for instance someone wanderers into a book store in my country (England) and asks for my book would it be listed under that ISBN? And are ISBN number from Lulu recycled and are they for the life of the book?
I know I can buy 10 ISBNs from Nielsen, and was wondering if this would be a better option, I have some other books in mind that I may write depending on their need. Are there any pluses to getting your own ISBN’s.
I plan on doing talks and demonstrations on the technique covered in my book; so I would advertise the meeting for say 20 to 30 people and included in the price of the evening’s talk and demonstration would be a copy of my book as it is also a workbook for after the group has met. My question is this, if I order say 30 copies, I guess I would pay the full price and recoup the outlay from the attendance price on the night, but how does that work because it looks as though I get paid twice for it, how does this look as taxable income. I understand also that I could be making a lot of fuss over nothing on this last point
)
I would appreciate your help or even being shown a relevant post from a question already posted on the forum.
Thanks so much for your assistance
Regards

ISBNs are for the life of that edition. If you get a free ISBN from Lulu - then Lulu is the publisher of record for the book and in the listing from Bowker and in Books in Print.
Yes, people will be able to special order the book by using the ISBN - if the bookstore is willing to order it. You will have to get the glocal distribution package to make sure your book is listed in the distribution feeds that the brink and mortar stores get.
You will need different ISBNs for each edition (Hardcover, Paperback, ebook, etc.)
If you buy an ISBN block or buy a single ISBN from Lulu - it will list you as the publisher of record. If you plan of continueing self-publishing or even expanding into a small press publishing company - it might be better to get your own ISBNs.
When you order books from Lulu - you will get a discount on those books - you basically pay cost of printing - when you upload the book into the publishing wizard it will tell you your cost for the book. You then set the retail price for the book at a price higher than the cost.
You do not earn royalties on books you purchase - only on books sold through a retail channel
You will need to talk to a tax expert regarding tax questions. Lulu will send you your payments based on sale generated and on the payment option you select (paypal or physical check) and there is a record in the "Revenue" link under the "My Lulu" tab.
Since you are in the UK - you will need to fill out additional paperwork as well as Lulu will withhold 30% of you earning as tax without the appropriate forms on file. This is required by the IRS. More information on the paperwork should be available through your "My Lulu" tab - reveiw the information under Remittance Settings - I beleive there is a link there for non-US authors/publishers. (I'm in the US so have never had to worry about that specific paperwork.
Good luck with your book
