Downloading a purchased revised eBook/ePub

Yesterday I purchased an eBook that neither I -- or it seems, the author -- had known was protected by DRM. The author has since updated the product to change this but it still seems the only version that I can download is the previously purchased and protected one. 

Is this just the way it is? And does that mean I would have to purchase the exact same product a second time in order to get the DRM-free version?

I guess you would have to buy again. Why not ask the Authorto send you a new copy direct?
