Accurate Book Length?

Brand new as of ten minutes ago, so forgive me if a thousand people before me asked this same question:

How can you accurately predict the length of your book?  My Word .doc is 256 pages long, but using the LuLu template for a 6 X 9 Trade Book I ended up with 370+ pages.  Am I doing something wrong?  Also, I thought we were supposed to use .pdf files?  I tried copying and pasting a .pdf file into the LulU template, and the pages looked nothing like the pages of a book.  Weird looking format came out.  I'm thinking I need some help, yes?

Re: Accurate Book Length?

Welcome aboard - especially with radar in a name.
First have a look at this tutorial
http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/creating-your-book-with-microsoft-word---a-tutorial/16069616?produ...

When you start creating a Word document for a Lulu book you must make the Word page size the same as the final book page size.
Don't bother with the Lulu templates as they create more problems than prevent them. By all means have a quick look but just set everything up in Word yourself. See the advice in the tutorial for margins and facing pages.

Once you've created your Word document you can start on the Lulu Publishing Wizard and upload your Word doc when prompted. The wizard will run a converter to convert the .doc into a Print Ready PDF.

Alternatively you can create a PDF yourself and upload that rather than a .doc. Remember page sizes must always be equal.

Re: Accurate Book Length?

Thanks, Ken! Just bought your tutorial. One last question (hopefully): In my Word .doc I have two spaces between lines, but in the book template the layout looks better with only one line between lines of text. Is this the correct way to do the book template compared to my manuscript template?
