Re: uploading my own cover design

Yes. You can either upload separate image files for the front and/or back covers, or you can upload a single PDF file that has the back, spine and front all as one big image. This HELP page has an overview of cover information: http://www.lulu.com/en/help/book_covers_faq

Re: uploading my own cover design

I've created a Lulu book each year for multiple years, creating my own front and back covers as png images. I cannot find any way with the current cover tools to do the same thing this year. Is this option still available? If so where (and why is it so hard to find)?

Re: uploading my own cover design

I too am starting to have problems with cover uploads. I prefer the old wizard, but the option to select this just does not work, it forces me to work with the current pile of junk. Getting the basic front and back covers on is still ok, but trying to add text to the spine is a mystery. Anyone care to enlighten me on that?

Thanks

JR

Re: uploading my own cover design

The only problem I'm experiencing is after the upload - the page doesn't update or respond (and I wait even 4 minutes for it considering the 9 MB file should only take 18 seconds for me to download) - I have to back track to the previous step by clicking the tab at the top then try again where in that case, it does work and I see the updated cover. I use the one-piece cover method and an image that's 3860x2775 pixels (for a 6x9 book with 273 pages).

The only thing I see is a preview of the cover at the top (scaled down significantly), an input field with a "browse" and "upload" button to the right, and the usual "back" and "save & continue" buttons at the bottom. Once I click "upload", I see the progress bar filling up, updating usually once every second, though sometimes it goes on for 30 seconds instead. The "time elapsed" and "time remaining" text updates about twice a second. Once the progress bar is filled completely, nothing else happens - it doesn't disappear and a "success" notice doesn't appear upon completion like it does with the book's interior part.

It seems like this section of the process has a few bugs present that need to be ironed out (class 4 on my 0 to 8 scale, for moderate severity (8 is the worst)). This behavior was present on Sep 23, 2009 when I first put my book on so it's a bug I've known about for quite a long time (4 months now).

Edit: I forgot to mention that I'm using Firefox 3.5.7 and Windows XP SP3, fully up to date.

Re: uploading my own cover design

Images initially must be designed at the intended/required resolution.  Upscaling is never good.  Downscaling is fine, but it causes the image to lose size though slightly quality.  When I designed the cover for my book, I designed it at the intended size of 300 dpi.  One trick that artists sometimes use is to design your image at a size 2, 4, 5, or even 10 times the intended size then scale it down to the correct size.  This boosts the quality slightly as it provides antialiasing without having to directly have antialiasing.  I use it for my textures in my game design stuff I do and it works wonders.
