Paul's right. Old books had bland covers.
But man, look at those gorgeous *spines* !

You call the examples we pasted bland?! Hand tooled gold-embossed leather?!
Have a look For Chris Foss book covers. They are a bit more recent, but still old

Now that's a name I havent heard for a while - Chris Foss. Back in the good old days (that's late 1980's!) I was a member of The Science Fiction Book Club, one of the millions of book clubs under the Guild Publishing banner, all originating from a mysterious building in Swindon. A building that, nearly twenty five years later, I would end up passing each day on my journey to work.
Sorry. I digress.
So anyway, when I was a member of that club I used to love buying the compilation books of art by these guys, like Chris Foss, Chris Achilleos, Roger Dean, Tim White and others. Absolutely loved that sort of artwork and could spend hours staring at one of their creations, examining the intricate detail in their paintings. They were like worlds, waiting to be explored.
So yes - I was making a lame joke in the post you quoted. The Chris Foss artwork you posted is superb.
