Overdrive

I've been reading up on distribution, ebook and print, and it appears that libraries will only stock your ebook if it is on Overdrive. Just beginning to inform myself, but I was wondering, does lulu distribute books to Overdrive?

Interesting article:

From what I could tell on the website, it's a startup Hungarian company with investors from Estonia.

The one job posting with a specified location lists Budapest.

Not certain how a company based in Hungary would affect libraries in the US or Canada.

Per a different article Ingram Library and a few other companies also handle library distribution.

Lulu might want to consider offering an option for in the epub distribution process is the SELF-e program.

People would have to opt in which is free, and a copy sold to a library wouldn't earn a royalty, but it would potentially get self-pub authors a lot of exposure.

There is an article about it. https://www.janefriedman.com/selfpub-distribution-libraries/

They do a contest thing, one could assume to weed out the chaff. http://self-e.libraryjournal.com/#authors

Perhaps if Lulu and SELF-e were to engage in a discussion it might be beneficial for both entities?

  • Interesting.

I think libraries would buy the intial copy then lend it out.

Libraries (especially in small towns) usually have tight budgets. They might pay for e-copy from trad-publishers, leaving little to spare for the rest.

I believe the SELF-e deal is they essentially vet the work through their contest system, while the author forgoes collecting royalties from various libraries on e-pub copies in order to gain a lot of exposure. The author can opt out at any time. Think of it as potential promo copies to libraries, wherein if readers like the book, they go on to buy their own e-copy or print copy. [Some guy named Hugh Howie mentioned that last part.]

Now if Lulu and the people running SELF-e came to an arrangement, it could streamline the process for authors who own the rights to their work to submit their work for consideration, get some authors' epubs into libraries, and quite possibly lead to a lot of later sales.

It's a trade off like most issues. Pay a lot for marketing / advertising, or spend a lot of time submitting each title to various venues, or offer up virtual-copies royalty free to libraries in lieu of paying for adverts.

Then again, as a simple farm boy long off the farm, I've no head for all that kind of deep strategy type thinking.

  • I mentioned this a little while ago here, as our local libraries all use Overdrive. I don't think anything has come of it on our end, but we're really prioritizing upgrading our print tool at the moment. Ebooks are something we'll have to look at in the not too distant future, and Overdrive is something we're at least aware of.
  • Thank you, Paul. That's great to know.

  • Ok, tested it. Zero sales. However....there'a an Italian one which is very effective. Message me privately if you need a heads up.
