Book Previews - What they are and How they work

Previews allow potential readers to view a small portion of your book or calendar before buying. It's just like thumbing through a book at the bookstore!

How do I create a preview of my work?

From you My Projects page, click the title of your calendar or photo book. Then select the link to 'create a preview' and follow the steps.

For Calendars and Photo Books:

Calendar Previews default (Simple) to displaying 12 months.

Simple
  • The first 12 months of your calendar is the preview.

Design Your Own
  • Determine the pages that you want the preview to include. Select from four available options.
    • Small Preview displays the first 3 months
    • Large Preview displays the first 7 months
    • Entire Calendar displays up to 21 months
    • Custom Range allows you to define the months displayed. Example: "1,3,5-8" would indicate the 1st, 3rd, and 5th through 8th months in the calendar.

For Print Book:

Book previews are excerpts from your book. At Lulu, customers can view pages in your book as they appear in the printed version. The number of pages in this preview depends on the size of the book, but the automatically generated preview (Simple) is the first 10 pages.

You may choose to offer a preview for your book using one of the following methods.

Simple
  • The first 10 pages of your work is the preview. This includes front matter such as title, dedication, and copyright pages.

Design Your Own

  • Determine the pages that you want the preview to include. Choose from a certain number of pages (first 5 pages, first 15 pages, the entire book) or select particular pages. Include the title page and the first few pages of your first chapter, bypassing any copyright, dedication, or table of contents pages.
    • Provide the actual page order number rather than the assigned number that prints at the bottom of a page. For example, if the first three pages of a book were a title page, a blank page, and a dedication page, the number "3" would indicate the dedication page — not, say, the 3rd page in the 1st chapter.
    • Separate numbers with commas.
    • Use a hyphen (-) to provide a range of numbers.
    • Example: "1,3,5-8" would indicate the 1st, 3rd, and 5th through 8th pages in the book

For Ebooks:

Ebook previews must be uploaded as either a DOCX or EPUB file.

The maximum file size for previews is 2MB.

Revising a Preview

If you have a Preview created, you will have the option on the Revision page to 'edit' the Preview or create a replacement Preview.

When you select 'edit' you'll see two additional options:

Keep Current Preview

  • Keeps whatever is currently set as your preview. The default is "Simple."
Remove Current Preview
  • Removes the preview for your book. Your book will not have a preview.

When you create a new preview, you lose your old preview. Make sure you have a backup of your existing custom preview before experimenting, so you can reinstate it if you wish.

Note: If you published your book before April 11, 2006, Lulu did not generate a preview. If you previously uploaded a book preview, it has not changed. If you would like to generate a new book preview, follow the directions above. If you create a new book preview and decide you don't like it, you may remove it and revert to your old, previously uploaded preview.
